Today we are excited to launch our first Annual Fundraising Appeal for the Klezmer Institute, an organization solely focused on Ashkenazic expressive culture – the unique musical heritage of the Yiddish-speaking Jews of Eastern Europe. By the end of 2020, we hope to raise $3,000 to support the Klezmer Institute’s mission.

Why Klezmer Institute?
Klezmer Institute is different because we are focused on Ashkenazic expressive culture all year round. We’re just setting down our roots as an organization, so you probably haven’t donated to us before and chances are you donate to other really outstanding organizations with similar goals. We’ve donated to them too and are continually grateful for their invaluable work. That being said, we wouldn’t have founded the Institute if we didn’t think there was work for us to do too! We believe that studying and sharing Ashkenazic expressive culture is of the utmost importance, in order to understand and build upon the Ashkenazic Jewish cultural legacy. If you believe so too, a donation to the Klezmer Institute is one way to support it!

What exactly would your donation do?

  • The General Operating Fund keeps our organization running in the broadest sense.  Funds support the behind-the-scenes administration work, overhead expenses, and additional project expenses. Right now, our Directors mostly donate their time and often support small financial expenses on their own. As we said, we’re a new organization! We’re still growing, building community, applying for grant funding, and seeking donors.  Your donation to this fund will lay the foundation for years of programs, projects, collaborations, and work within our community.

Donations can also be made to our designated project funds:

  • KMDMP is an international digital humanities project that makes available manuscripts from the An-ski expeditions in the early twentieth century. Donations to the KMDMP Fund support transcription & translation work, administration, and ongoing research on this invaluable collection.

  • The Publishing/Resources Fund helps cover the editing, design/layout, and printing costs of new articles, music folios, and small books. The production costs range from $6,000 – $9,000 to make a new tune folio available to our community.

We would be honored to have your support in these formative years of the Klezmer Institute.  Please visit our Support Page to sign up to be a volunteer or to make a donation today!
