A Joyful Noise! Klezmer in Motion
A Joyful Noise! Features a collection of photographs by Lloyd Wolf, documenting the burgeoning international Jewish klezmer music scene over a thirty-plus year span. From old-school performers of the form to the latest young cutting-edge bands, these pictures provide a rousing visual journey exploring this vibrant musical tradition.
These photographs sizzle with energy, capturing the soul and sound of the performers in visual form. No other photographic archive of this significant world music has existed—until now.
244 pages, with an introduction by Seth Rogovoy and preface by Frank London.
“Lloyd [Wolf]’s photographs of klezmer musicians and the klezmer scene do more than just document the players and the historical evolution of klezmer over the past four decades. While on a basic level Lloyd’s work obviously captures the visual imagery of the scene, Lloyd, too, is a musical artist. His instrument happens to be his camera. His photographs sing with as lively a tune as any clarinetist or violinist, digging deep into the soul of the music itself.”

“Lloyd Wolf is a warrior. For justice, for memory, for a better world, for tikkun olam (the Jewish concept of repairing the world). His weapon is a camera… He finds a cause, a mission, a people, a culture, researches it, embraces it, and most importantly, documents it… For this, the klezmer world and all cultural Jews owe Lloyd Wolf a deep debt of gratitude.”
