Sharing Music and Stories from the KMDMP Corpus

Trampled Manuscripts: The Lost Klezmer Music of the An-ski Expeditions visiting artist residencies connect klezmer musicians and their home communities to a treasure trove of newly-available music from 100 years ago. Concerts premier selections from 1,400 newly-available tunes being digitized through Klezmer Institute’s 2020 international community-driven digital humanities project Kiselgof-Makonovetsky Digital Manuscript (KMDMP), and workshops, lectures, and professional coaching create a week of immersive programming with something for everyone. Programs center storytelling and connection, and audiences will hear everything from long-form concertos to elegant mazurkas and soulful Jewish wedding ritual melodies.

We’re collaborating with local partners to bring Trampled Manuscripts Artist Residencies to many communities in 2025

• January 8-15, Seattle, Olympia, Bellingham, WA. Full immersive residency in the Pacific Northwest with Shpilkis and a PNW version of Christina and the Zamlers.
• June, Victoria, BC Canada — KMDMP Trampled Manuscripts Residency with the Kvell’s Angels Klezmer Band as part of KlezCadia: A Safer Klezmer Festival.
• August, Hopewell Jct., NY — Learning klezmer through KMDMP tunes at Trip To Yiddishland with the Workers Circle.
• November, Detroit, MI — Planned KMDMP Residency hoted by Congregation T’chiyah. 

Two Major Residencies and Lots of Concerts

We hit the road in 2024 to bring the KMDMP corpus to the Arizona, New Mexico, and Minnesota. 

• January 14, New Haven, CT. Zamlers Concert.
• January 18-21, Albuquerque, NM. The Zamlers West ensemble performs with the Shabbat With Friends in Santa Fe with additional workshops in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
• January 24-28, Phoenix, AZ. KMDMP Trampled Manuscripts Artist Residency with the Little Chef Klezmer Band.
• May 19, Yonkers, NY. Zamlers Trio concert at the Philipse Manor Hall Museum.
• October 22-27 Minneapolis, MN — KMDMP Trampled Manuscripts Residency with Di Bayke and the Longfellow Street Village Band. 

• July 8, Cummington, MA — KMDMP workshop as part of the Klez Cummington music festival. 
• August 17, Portland, OR  — Christina and the Zamlers concert at the Eastside Jewish Commons featuring Yankl Falk and Andrew Ehrlich
• October 1, Victoria, BC Canada — Kvell’s Angels Klezmer Band performed a Trampled Manuscripts Concert at the University of Victoria featuring a full program of KMDMP music.
• October 21, Newtown, CT — Christina & the Zamlers concert at the CH Booth Library in Newtown, featuring Ozzy Irving Gold Shapiro and James Kessler. The concert was part of co-programming with the Yiddish Book Center “Stories of Exile” reading program. 
• November 18, Spring Valley, NY — Christina & the Zamlers concert as part of the Great Room Concert series, featuring Raffi Boden and Keryn Kleiman.

• January 29, Greenfield, MA  — A concert with the Klez Cabal Trio at Temple Israel, Greenfield as part of the Shtetl Twang series.
• March 16-20 Klezmer Resdency in Washington DC — Concert, Band coaching, Worskhops
• April 23-May 7, Ligoure, France — Fun Dor Tsu Dor, Yiddish culture festival featuring music from the KMDMP corpus
• May 9, Bordeaux, France — Bordeaux Yiddish Land Concert, a solo recital of music from the Makonovetsky Manuscript with violinist Judith Nemtanu
• May 10-15, Ghent & Brussels, Belgium — Artist Residency with Concert, Workshop, Lecture, & Jam Session.
• November 20, Bordeaux, France — Trampled Manuscripts, the Lost Klezmer Music of the An-sky Expeditions and their Connection to Classical Composers. Judit Nemtanu. This talk will present information about the history of KMDMP and some amazing tunes found in the collection including Prokofiev’s melody on jewish themes, compositions by Podetser, nigunim, freylekhs,  skotchnes, mazurkas and more…..

• September 11, West Hartford, CT  — A concert to conclude the 2022 Survivors of the Shoah conference
• October 14, Hamden, CT  —  Kabbalat shabbat service and concert
• November 20, Bordeaux, France — Trampled Manuscripts, the Lost Klezmer Music of the An-sky Expeditions and their Connection to Classical Composers. Judit Nemtanu. This talk will present information about the history of KMDMP and some amazing tunes found in the collection including Prokofiev’s melody on jewish themes, compositions by Pedutser, nigunim, freylekhs,  skotchnes, mazurkas and more…..
• December 3, Providence, RI — A concert at Temple Emanu-El featuring the Bivolita Trio with Special Guest Amy Olson.

• June 30, Geneva, Switzerland — A Special Fundraising Concert at the Grande Synagogue Beth-Yaacov de Genève

This concert was sponsored by the Jewish Community of Geneva, and all funds raised were used to support the needs of Ukrainian refugees in Geneva.
